The St. Mark's George I. Forsythe Scholarship

Forsythe Endowment Scholarship recipient, Nadija Peterson (center), with members of the Endowment Scholarship sub-committee (left to right) Teege Culp, Merilyn Smith, Jane Forsythe, Barney Forsythe, Woody Rutter, and Kathlyn Gray. Nadija, Valedictorian of her Whale Branch Early College High School class, is currently pursuing a degree in fashion design at Savannah College of Art and Design.

St. Mark’s Vestry and the Endowment Committee have established the St. Mark’s George I. Forsythe Scholarship, a need-based postsecondary scholarship to be awarded to local high school graduates of color. This scholarship is the result of Sacred Ground participants being inspired by their experience to follow Christ’s commandment to love our neighbors, especially those who have been most marginalized historically.

The scholarship was made possible by generous contributions from members and friends of St. Mark’s, including a substantial gift of $250,000 to the St. Mark’s Endowment by an anonymous donor outside of our congregation. The gift was given in recognition of General Forsythe’s profound impact on his life over a very short period many years ago. General Forsythe’s influence on this individual is a reminder of how following the gospel commandment can plant seeds that bear fruit in later years. We pray that the St. Mark’s George I. Forsythe Scholarship will plant seeds like this in the lives of all recipients for many years to come. Click here to learn the full story.

The scholarship fund is designed to support a student from north of the Broad River while he or she pursues a two- or four-year degree at an accredited college or university with a stipend of $2,000 per year. This scholarship will follow the student if he or she makes adequate progress toward graduation. We are grateful the St. Mark’s George I. Forsythe Scholarship Fund is now at a level to fund four $2,000 scholarships for a total of $8,000 per year!

Thanks be to God!
